Highlighting Herbs as Functional Food Ingredients

Herbs have a long history of use throughout the world both in cooking and traditional herbal medicines. AGM Foods uses herbal superfoods in several of our fermented food formulations. Our unique FloraFerm fermentation process enhances the properties of these herbs by making them more easily absorbed and utilised by the body. Here are some of the specially selected herbs we use, a few of their amazing properties and the products that contain them.

Dong Quai:  A type of wild celery, Dong Quai (Angelica Sinensis) root has a distinctive strong celery-like flavour and has been used as a medicinal herb in China, Korea and Japan for centuries. Dong Quai, often called the “female ginseng,” is rich in phytoestrogens which are plant-based compounds that can mimic estrogen and may help regulate hormonal cycles for women. Research suggests that Dong Quai may also be useful as a mild laxative by helping to lubricate intestines. It may also help improve blood circulation. Used in: Dong Quai liquid and Phytofood powder

Echinacea root: Known as an immune boosting herb with active polysaccharide and glycoprotein compounds which enhance the production of white blood cells to help fight infections, colds and viruses. High in antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties. Used in: Gut Harmony

Fennel Seed: Nutrient rich containing vitamin A and C plus calcium, magnesium and potassium which are helpful for healthy eyes, skin and bone. Fennel seeds are also high in phytoestrogens which can help support hormonal balance. High in fibre which helps promote good digestion. Used in: Gut Harmony

Ginkgo biloba leaf: Ginkgo is a prescription herb in Germany and several other European countries. Studies have confirmed gingko biloba enhances oxygen utilisation which helps improve memory, concentration, and other mental faculties. It may be of value in the treatment of depression in elderly people. It improves long-distance vision and may reverse damage to the retina of the eye and may also provide relief for people suffering from headaches, sinusitis, and vertigo. Used in: Flora Mushroom Blend

Ginseng (Panax/ True Ginseng): Is considered the most potent type of ginseng. It is known for its energising effects and immune boosting properties. The active ginsenosides it contains are helpful for stimulating the brain and boosting energy levels. Research also suggests ginsenosides may be anti-tumour and anti-viral. Used in: Artamix and Artamix Capsules

Oregano: High in antioxidants. Carvacrol and thymol are antioxidants found in oregano which have antiviral and anti-inflammatory benefits. It is also a good source of vitamins and minerals including vitamin K for bone health. Used in: Gut Harmony

Peppermint: Well know for its digestive benefits, helping to relieve gas, bloating and indigestion. Peppermint also helps relieve nausea and headaches. Used in: Gut Harmony

Siberian Ginseng (Eleuthero): Has been used for thousands of years as a folk remedy for bronchitis, heart ailments and as a tonic to improve general health, restore memory and increase stamina. Siberian Ginseng has a less stimulating effect compared to True Ginseng. Current research suggests that the active eleutherosides help enhance mental and physical performance, helping to reduce long term stress and fatigue. Siberian Ginseng also helps lower blood sugar levels and boosts the immune system. Used in: Flora Mushroom Blend

AGM Foods are always researching to find the best botanical superfood ingredients, old and new for our formulations. Other similar plant-based ingredients used by us which are not actually herbs include hemp (from hemp seeds) which is classed as a seed. There is also ginger, garlic and turmeric, but these are classified as spices rather than herbs – which opens up the potential for a whole other article on botanical ingredients!

Always check with your Doctor or Health Practitioner if a product is right for you.
