Spotlight on Hemp Seed

At AGM Foods we are always on the lookout for high nutrient superfoods to use in our product formulations. In this blog we are shining the spotlight on organic hemp seeds and organic hemp protein (made from organic hemp seeds), which feature in our Grainfields Organic Hemp Seed Sprinkle, Grainfields Organic Hemp Powder and Grainfields Hemp Crunch Bars.

So, why are hemp seeds such a superfood hero?

  • High in protein and amino acids: For those following a plant based diet and needing to ensure they are eating enough protein, hemp seeds are a great food choice. They are an excellent source of protein, containing about 50 to 70 percent more protein than chia or linseed. Protein is an important nutrient for building and maintaining bones and muscle. There are not many plant-based foods which are considered a complete protein, meaning they contain all nine essential amino acids. Hemp seeds are an exception as they do contain all nine essential amino acids. The body cannot produce these essential amino acids so they must be absorbed from food.
  • A good source of vitamins and minerals: Hemp seeds are a good source of vitamin E, B-group, folate and thiamine. They are high in minerals including phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and iron.
  • High in fibre: Even without the outer shells or hulls, hemp seeds are a good source of fibre, with three tablespoons containing approximately1.2g of fibre. Fibre is important in the diet for healthy digestion and avoiding issues such as constipation. Fibre has other health benefits including lowering cholesterol and reducing the risk of diabetes and colon cancer.
  • Rich in fatty acids: Hemp seeds have one of the best ratios of essential fatty acids of any plant food , being particularly rich in the “good” oils omega 3, 6 and 9. These essential omega fats are known to help reduce inflammation, improve immunity, promote circulation and aid skin repair.
  • Heart health benefits: Hemp seeds are especially rich in an amino acid called arginine, which has benefits for heart health. Arginine produces nitric oxide in the body which helps blood vessels dilate and relax, leading to lowered blood pressure and a reduced risk of issues such as arrythmias and heart disease.
  • Low in allergens: Allergic reactions to hemp seeds are not common. Hemp seeds are technically considered a nut rather than a seed. They are free from soy, dairy and gluten so may also be beneficial for those with intolerances, or allergies to other seeds and nuts.
  • Low in carbs: Hemp seeds contain practically no carbohydrates with less than half a gram of sugar per 20g.

AGM Foods believe we have enhanced organic hulled hemp seeds and organic hemp protein through the power of our unique FloraFerm fermentation process making these amazing nutritional elements more bio – available and easily absorbed.
